So, basically, I have used every-other-day fasting to get down to 200 pounds, and will use it again whenever I go over that. But I’m now easing up to an every-third-day regimen for the 190-200 pound range. Hopefully, I’ll continue to lose weight on that, even if a bit more slowly. And once I get below 190, the plan is to fast once a week, even if it isn’t needed to stay below 190. (This is in part because there is reason to think there may be health benefits beyond weight control [largely cognitive benefits] associated with intermittent fasting, and also in part because I find intermittent fasting to be a good exercise, in large part because it makes me more cognizant of how blessed I am.)

Here are few pointers in order to make your intermittent fasting experiment more successful. First of all, it’s good to do this at a time when you’re not traveling, and you can control your environment. For hydration during periods of fasting, it’s advisable to drink plenty of fluids.  Depending on the length of time, some may do well to use electrolyte tabs in their water, drink unsweetened teas or coffee, drink bone broth, or even eat some coconut oil, depending on the situation. Taking a multivitamin every day can ensure one’s overall nutrient status is stable throughout. Detoxifying supplements like magnesium or glutathione could further enhance the body’s ability to get rid of unnecessary junk during fasting as well.
Certain fasts such as Ramadan and Yom Kippur require you to go without water throughout the fast. Though this does not cause any lasting harm, you are most likely to feel dehydrated towards the end of the fast. Thus, it is important to keep yourself hydrated after the fast. If you are not fasting for religious reasons, make it a point to drink plenty of water during your fast.
After a fast, the greatest danger lies in eating too much and too frequently. If you rush into eating solid foods, overloading your digestive organs with large amounts of food, you may provoke acute attacks of indigestion and experience physical problems such as diarrhea, sickness and fainting. Moreover, you risk serious medical disturbances. Before embarking on a fast, speak to your doctor. Also, if you do ignore all the warnings and pursue overeating after breaking your fast, you will pile on weight (fat, not fluid).
So, is juicing good for you at all? The real problem with juice cleansing is that it deprives your body of healthy fats and other essential nutrients your body requires to operate. This makes you feel terrible and can also cause you to lose that hard-earned muscle, which in turn slows down your metabolism, making it even harder to lose weight or maintain what you have lost.

As I lost weight, I found I was able to take up running again. (While I was still too heavy for running, I did mostly bike riding.) For a while, I was running 5 miles/day, and finding that, because of that running, I didn’t have to be too careful any longer about my eating to keep my weight steady. But then I got too busy at work, and my running became sporadic, and then pretty much stopped altogether. Meanwhile, the fairly careless eating continued. Over the course of several years my weight crept back up, eventually surpassing what it had been when I was initially scared into losing weight (and making even the thought of running ridiculous). Other signs of ill health showed up in the results of my blood work for my annual physicals and at the physicals themselves, and I was put on medications, first for blood pressure, then for cholesterol.
2. Motor activity during the fasting. Influence of the motor mode to weight changes during fasting is ambiguous. It seemed that the more physical activity during fasting - the greater must be the decline in weight. But, in reality, the man who leads an active lifestyle, can lose weight is less than the man who during fasting is always in bed. This feature is clearly visible after fasting hypoglycemic crisis. You can go all day, perform a variety of work, and in the evening, standing on the scales to discover that your weight has not changed. But, if you weigh after sleep, when, apparently, the body is resting, you will immediately notice a significant weight loss.
Because you'll eat often—at least every four hours—and drink as much water and decaffeinated tea as you want, you'll beat bloat while keeping your blood sugar steady and your energy high. Keep in mind that the initial weight lost on a fast is primarily fluid or "water weight," not fat. And when you go back to eating, any lost weight usually gets a return ticket back. A mere five years ago, skipping meals was a top diet taboo. Now it's the core of an increasingly popular (and increasingly research-backed) weight-loss approach. Intermittent fasting—periodically eating very little—is not only not bad for you, it may lower blood glucose levels and insulin resistance and reduce inflammation and cardiovascular risk. Why? How? That's not to say every cleanse is bad. Done in a healthy (read: sane) way, detoxing "can feel like an intervention, a fresh beginning," Hellerstein says. "Most people eat way more food than necessary, which taxes the liver and kidneys," says Ronald Stram, M.D., director of the Center for Integrative Health and Healing in New York.
