Because you're consuming nothing but water on a water fast, you're depriving your body of nutrition for extended periods of time, which shifts your metabolism into a "fasting state"—the precursor to the "starvation state," says Whitney Linsenmeyer, Ph.D., R.D., a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and an instructor in the department of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University.
Weight loss is one of the greatest benefits of fasting. This is because when you fast, your body is forced to use the stored fats for getting energy. Lipolysis increases and insulin decreases during fasting.Eating less food slows down your metabolism to conserve energy. Fasting also increases the catecholamines. These catecholamines help in providing some energy while burning fat in our body during fasting. Professionally supervised fasts are best for controlling serious obesity as they offer both medical and psychological support during the process of fasting, ultimately leading you towards healthy eating habits.

2. Motor activity during the fasting. Influence of the motor mode to weight changes during fasting is ambiguous. It seemed that the more physical activity during fasting - the greater must be the decline in weight. But, in reality, the man who leads an active lifestyle, can lose weight is less than the man who during fasting is always in bed. This feature is clearly visible after fasting hypoglycemic crisis. This type of dietary pattern would be difficult for someone who eats every few hours (e.g., snacks between meals, grazes). It would also not be appropriate for those with conditions that require food at regular intervals due to metabolic changes caused by their medications, such as with diabetes. Prolonged periods of food deprivation or semi-starvation places one at risk for overeating when food is reintroduced, and may foster unhealthy behaviors such as an increased fixation on food. [7,8]

And I also kept up my exercise, doing a solid hour of aerobic exercise (usually on an elliptical machine, or, about once per week, running), working very hard for that hour, about 6 times per week. This South American tea comes from the yerba mate plant. Its leaves and twigs are dried, usually over a fire, and steeped in hot water to make an herbal tea. This caffeine-containing tea, often called mate, may help promote weight loss. Some consider it an ideal substitute for coffee, minus the bitterness. The Mayo Clinic advises, however, to enjoy this tea in moderation. Some studies have found that people who drink large amounts of mate over prolonged periods may be at increased risk for certain types of cancer such as cancer of the mouth, lungs and esophagus (smoking in combination with drinking mate increases the cancer risk).
